The honest answer

Do backlinks still matter, and how many does a site need?

Links are still one of the clearest signals of trust on the open web. They are also easy to overvalue, and that is where most spending goes wrong.

Our position

They matter, mostly as proof that other people vouch for you

Google has said for years that links remain a ranking signal. They also have said that quality matters far more than count. We agree with both and sell accordingly.

  • No magic number of links exists for any site.
  • The right count is whatever puts you near the rivals you are chasing.
  • Weak content with strong links still disappoints.

How Google's stance on links moved

  1. Penguin launches

Google starts demoting sites with manipulative link patterns. Mass link buying becomes visibly risky.

  2. Penguin 4.0

Penguin runs in real time as part of the core system and devalues spam links rather than penalising whole sites.

  3. SpamBrain link spam update

Google announces an AI system for detecting link spam and neutralising the value of such links.

  4. Core and spam policy update

Google tightens its spam policies, including expired domain abuse and site reputation abuse. Links are not removed from the system, but junk is harder to profit from.

How many backlinks does a site need?

Stop searching for a threshold. The useful number is relative. Open Ahrefs or Semrush, put in the three sites that currently hold the positions you want, and look at their referring domains. Not total links. Referring domains, because fifty links from one site count as roughly one vote.

If your closest rivals have 40 referring domains and you have 6, you have a gap you can measure. If they have 900, you are not going to close it with a $100 order, and you should pick a narrower term where the field is thinner.

Worth saying twice: some pages rank with almost no links because nobody competes for the phrase. In that case, spending on links is waste and content or on-page work is the lever.

A note on tools. Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic and Moz each run their own crawler, so each shows a different count for the same site. Compare rivals within one tool, never between tools.

Links also work differently by page type. A guide, a tool or a comparison can attract them naturally. A contact page or a product page seldom does, which is why brands link to their guides and point internal links at the products. Context again.

Backlinks and internal links are different jobs

Internal links are the cheaper first step. Free, fast, yours. Orphan pages, meaning pages with no internal links pointing at them, are hard for crawlers to find and easy to fix. Do that before you pay for external help. Fix that first.

After that, links from other sites are what separate pages with similar content. We lay out how to choose them in how to judge a backlink, and how to pace them in the link building timeline.

Short questions, direct answers

Are internal links as powerful as backlinks?
No. They help Google understand your site, but they do not add outside trust. Use both, in that order.
Could links alone fix a weak page?
Rarely. A link can bring a page into view; it cannot make the page worth keeping there.
Does AI search change this?
It shifts the picture. Mentions and citations on trusted sites seem to matter for being named by AI tools, which we cover in AI search visibility.
